Bosco Money – Da Plan (1994 – Rare Records)
What’s da plan?!! Haha! I dropped this single in 1994. I did it using
a Shure SM57 microphone. I did not use a vocal booth. I held the mic
in my hand, while standing about 3 feet from the mixing console.
“Da Plan” was recorded at my boy Chris’ home studio in Park Slope,
Brooklyn. Once it was mixed down, I sent the DAT out to California
to get the single pressed up. I can’t remember the name of the place
that pressed the single. But what was nice about them was, they
would press small quantities – like 100 pieces. And the turn around
time was only 30 days. That was fast back then.
The rest you know. I put “Da Plan” out on my own label – Rare
Records. And took it all around New York City, hitting off club and
radio DJs. I also mailed copies to College Radio DJs all over the
country. Then I ultimately wound up putting “Da Plan” on the Secret
Agent LP. Since I felt that it was definitely an integral part of that
story.
The reception was positive on “Da Plan”. And I always felt like I had done exactly what I had wanted to do with this cut. That’s a great feeling for an independent artist to have; you succeeded in doing what
you set out to do. In my case, that was: Spit that fun shit, and get it out quick!
One thing about being independent. You never get to hear your
shit. It’s like, your’e just to too busy promoting it. You get word from
people that the joint is bumpin’ in clubs and jeeps and what not. But
that’s about it. Especially back in 1994, when the internet wasn’t
around. And promotion was all leg work.
Be that as it may, I had a lot of fun with this record. It was fun to do,
and fun to promote. And if I had to do it all over again, I would do it
the same way. Shout to all the independent hip hop artists out there doing their thing! Peace. Ken Omega aka Bosco Money.
